A resolution recognizing that climate change is making wildfires more frequent, more intense, and more destructive.
Sponsored By: Senator Whitehouse, Sheldon [D-RI]
Introduced
Summary
Climate-driven wildfire risk would be the central message of this Senate resolution. It would state that human-caused climate change is making higher temperatures and drought more common, which lengthens and intensifies fire weather and seasons.

- Families and communities: it would note recent disasters like the January 7, 2025 Los Angeles fires that destroyed more than 15,000 homes and businesses, killed more than two dozen people, and polluted air and soil — and a study showing climate change increased the fires' likelihood.
- Fire seasons and hazards: it would cite NASA and the U.S. Forest Service finding that fire seasons have lengthened (once four months, now six to eight) and that fires have become more frequent, intense, and larger.
- Federal action: it would acknowledge the need to fully fund and staff federal wildfire prevention and response activities and highlights a U.S. Geological Survey estimate that wildfires cost the United States about $424 billion annually (not counting health impacts).
