A resolution designating the first week of April as "National Asbestos Awareness Week".
Sponsored By: Senator Merkley, Jeff [D-OR]
Passed Senate
Summary
National Asbestos Awareness Week designates the first week of April to spotlight the health harms of asbestos and promote education and early detection. The resolution states asbestos fibers are invisible and inhalation can cause serious diseases including mesothelioma and asbestosis. Symptoms may take 10 to 50 years to appear and the projected life expectancy for mesothelioma is about 6 to 24 months. It notes there is no cure, early detection may improve treatment options, U.S. consumers still buy some asbestos-containing products, thousands die each year, many workers face high exposure—especially on naval ships and in shipyards, and residents of Libby, Montana, have higher rates. Designating the week for the 21st year aims to raise public awareness about exposure risks and disease.
