Summary
Recognize the 179th anniversary of the arrival of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and honor Pioneer Day. This bill would acknowledge the pioneers' escape from persecution, their arduous 1,300-plus mile journey beginning in February 1846, and their July 24, 1847 arrival in the Great Salt Lake Valley when Brigham Young declared "This is the right place." It highlights the pioneers' role in laying out a city, irrigating desert land, building homes and infrastructure, helping found more than 500 communities across the American West, and sustaining a 177-year tradition of Pioneer Day celebrations with parades, rodeos, reenactments, fireworks, and civic gatherings. The resolution calls for recognition, honor, commendation, and encouragement of the pioneers' legacy and spirit of self-reliance and enterprise.
