A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate regarding United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 (XXVI) and the harmful conflation of China's "One China Principle" and the United States'"One China Policy".
Sponsored By: Senator Risch, James E. [R-ID]
In Committee
Summary
Resolution 2758 does not decide Taiwan's status. This resolution would push back against the People's Republic of China when it equates that UN vote with its One China Principle and would clarify that U.S. policy differs from PRC claims.
Show full summary
- Supports Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations where statehood is not required and urges that Taiwan passport holders be allowed access to UN grounds without PRC-issued permits. Taiwan already maintains representative offices in more than 60 countries.
- Affirms that the U.S. One China Policy does not accept PRC sovereignty claims over Taiwan and endorses U.S. backing for Taiwan's diplomatic allies and for other nations strengthening partnerships with Taiwan.
- Encourages U.S. cooperation with partners to counter PRC misrepresentations of Resolution 2758 and condemns coercive PRC tactics that have prompted about 10 countries to sever ties with Taiwan since 2016.
