Expanding Medical Education Act

Grants to expand medical schools in underserved areas

If enacted, HHS would give grants to colleges to start or grow medical schools and branch campuses. Priority would go to places with no medical school that are medically underserved or shortage areas, and to some minority-serving colleges. Grants could fund planning, construction, accreditation, hiring, curriculum on rural and underserved care, and facility upgrades. Schools would need to recruit and keep disadvantaged, underrepresented, rural, low-income, and first-generation students. HHS would aim to spread awards across regions, require yearly school reports, and post results; it would report to Congress every 5 years. No dollar amount is set, so funding would depend on future appropriations; the program would start upon enactment.
