Ban new offshore drilling on West Coast
This bill would permanently bar new federal oil and gas activity off California, Oregon, and Washington. It would stop Interior and BOEM from issuing any lease or other approval for exploration, development, or production in four areas: Washington/Oregon, Northern California, Central California, and Southern California. The boundaries would follow BOEM’s 2024–2029 program announced September 29, 2023 (88 Fed. Reg. 67798, Oct. 2, 2023). If enacted, the ban would take effect upon enactment and apply regardless of other laws. Coastal communities could see environmental benefits, while oil and gas firms and some workers could lose development chances; fuel price impacts are uncertain.
