Children Don't Belong on Tobacco Farms Act

Sponsored By: Representative DeLauro, Rosa L. [D-CT-3]

Introduced

Summary

Prohibits child labor in tobacco farming. This bill would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to treat any employee under 18 who has direct contact with tobacco plants or dried tobacco leaves as subject to the Act's oppressive child labor prohibition, and it would remove tobacco-related agriculture from the list of exempted activities so tobacco farming is covered like other industries.

Ban on kids handling tobacco on farms

If enacted, this bill would bar anyone under 18 from work that touches tobacco plants or dried tobacco leaves. Tobacco farms and related employers would need to keep minors away from those tasks or reassign them. This would put these jobs under the Fair Labor Standards Act’s oppressive child labor rules. It would take effect upon enactment.
