Introduced

Summary

Standardize federal data on housing loss. A bill would direct the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Census Bureau to study how federal agencies identify and record housing displacement and to recommend ways to improve data collection, transparency, and sharing.

Show full summary
  • Families and renters: Would ensure federal tracking explicitly covers court-ordered evictions, informal evictions, mortgage foreclosures, tax-related foreclosures, and displacement from natural disasters so these events are defined and counted consistently.
  • Policymakers and researchers: Would require HUD and the Census to deliver a report within six months that identifies which types of housing loss are most common and which federal datasets capture them.
  • Federal agencies and regulators: Would mandate consultation with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Commerce’s Under Secretary for Economic Affairs to map existing data sources and sharing policies.
  • Data systems and transparency: Would direct agencies to describe dataset update frequency, geographic coverage, whether data are at the individual or household level, assess accuracy, recommend new or consolidated datasets, and identify any authorities or resources needed to implement those recommendations.
