Sponsored By: Representative Brown, Shontel M. [D-OH-11]

Introduced

Summary

This bill would authorize the HHS Secretary to fund research and state grants to increase early detection and intervention for uterine fibroids. It would also back public education campaigns and studies of surgical pain disparities and intrauterine conditions such as Asherman’s Syndrome.

Show full summary
  • Families and patients: Grants could pay for screening, including advanced gynecological imaging, and fund patient navigation to help people get timely care and appointments.
  • States and communities: States could receive grants to implement evidence-based strategies in health care settings, with priority for programs serving geographic areas where socially vulnerable populations face higher fibroid risk.
  • Researchers and clinicians: Would fund research on disparities in pain control during fibroid surgery and on Asherman’s Syndrome and intrauterine adhesions, and require reports to Congress and public posting of findings and program results every two years.

Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Grants to expand early fibroid screening

HHS would research how to spot fibroids sooner and share proven strategies with states. The bill would let HHS award state grants to grow early detection, intervention, and public awareness. States could use funds for screening and advanced imaging, to help pay for those services, and for patient navigation. Money could also help people reach clinics and put evidence-based practices in place. Grants would favor areas where vulnerable groups face higher fibroid risk and could lower some out-of-pocket costs.

Research on pain in fibroid surgery

HHS could fund research, including clinical trials, on pain control in fibroid surgery. Studies would also address Asherman’s Syndrome, intrauterine adhesions, and other intrauterine conditions. The goal would be better, fairer pain treatment and care. This would not change who gets health benefits now, but could improve care over time.
