Show full summary
- Families and community members would see the officer’s agency and last name or badge number when contacted, with identification required to be legible from at least 25 feet and readable in low-light and daylight.
- Covered officers includes Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and deputized individuals under federal law, who must display IDs on outer garments and avoid obscuring them with gear.
- The Department of Homeland Security must discipline noncompliance and produce an annual report within one year and each year after listing total public enforcement actions, documented noncompliance, and remedial steps; the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties would investigate public complaints and publish findings.

Visible ID and oversight for immigration officers
If enacted, immigration officers doing public enforcement in the U.S. would have to wear visible ID. The ID would show the agency and either the officer’s last name or badge number, readable from at least 25 feet in daylight and low light, on the outermost gear. Non-medical face coverings that block the ID would be banned, except when needed for covert work or hazardous conditions. DHS would discipline officers who do not comply, following agency and union rules. Within one year of enactment, and every year after, DHS would report totals, violations, and actions to its civil rights office and to Congress. The civil rights office would take public complaints, investigate, and issue recommendations.
