Local police must sign immigration agreement

This bill would make a State or local government that maintains a law enforcement agency ineligible for Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants unless that agency signs a written memorandum of agreement with the Secretary of Homeland Security under 8 U.S.C. 1357(g) within 180 days after enactment. The Attorney General would consult with the Secretary of Homeland Security to set procedures to confirm an agency has such an agreement before approving any COPS grant. The rule would take effect on the date of enactment and would apply to COPS grant applications for fiscal year 2027 and each fiscal year after.
