Raise awareness about necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This resolution would designate May 17, 2026 as Necrotizing Enterocolitis Awareness Day and highlight key facts about NEC and prevention. NEC is the leading cause of death in hospitalized premature infants after two weeks. Thousands of babies develop NEC each year and hundreds die. The disease can destroy intestinal tissue, often requires surgery that is not curative, and can cause lifelong neurological and nutritional problems. NEC drives about $5 billion in hospital costs annually. Breast milk offers the strongest protection and pasteurized donor milk is the next-safest option. The resolution urges more data, family-centered care, and attention to higher NEC rates and deaths among Black infants.
