World Oceans Day would be officially recognized by this resolution, celebrating the ocean's vital role in U.S. history, economy, security, and national identity. It would honor fishermen, mariners, shipbuilders, scientists, coastal and indigenous communities, and the Navy and Coast Guard, recognize the 50th anniversary of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and the 20th anniversary of the Marine Debris Program, and highlight marine debris and microplastics as threats to navigation, fisheries, and coastal livelihoods.
