Sponsored By: Representative McGovern

Introduced

Summary

Lead a global effort to halt and reverse the nuclear arms race. This resolution would urge the President to pursue nuclear disarmament as a national security goal and to push concrete steps to lower the risk of nuclear war.

Show full summary
  • Families, communities, and workers: Calls for full cleanup of environmental contamination, health monitoring, compensation, and expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act for people harmed by weapons research, testing, production, storage, or maintenance.
  • National security and risk reduction: Would direct the U.S. to engage in good faith negotiations with the other 8 nuclear-armed states to halt further buildups, pursue verifiable reductions, seek new arms-control agreements with Russia, engage China on mutual risk reduction, push all nuclear states to renounce first use, end hair-trigger alert, and implement checks on the President's sole authority to order nuclear strikes.
  • Economy and workforce: Seeks to end plans to produce and deploy new nuclear warheads and delivery systems which the resolution says would reduce the burden on taxpayers, and to actively plan a just economic transition for civilian and military workers and for communities economically dependent on nuclear facilities.
