FAA Urges Check on Wonky Cockpit Voice Recorder Switches Now

Published Date: 2/19/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA wants all MHI RJ Aviation ULC regional jets to get a quick check to make sure the cockpit voice recorder’s impact switch is installed the right way. If it’s not, fixes will be needed to keep flights safe. This inspection needs to happen soon, but it won’t break the bank—just a smart safety move for pilots and passengers alike!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Operators Must Inspect CVR Impact Switch

If you operate, own, or maintain MHI RJ Aviation ULC Model CL-600-2C10, CL-600-2C11, CL-600-2D15, CL-600-2D24, or CL-600-2E25 airplanes, the FAA would require an inspection to confirm the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) impact switch reset switch faces forward. You must also perform any applicable on-condition actions described in the Transport Canada airworthiness directive that the FAA proposes to incorporate by reference.

Passengers and Pilots Get Safety Check

The FAA proposes this airworthiness directive to address an unsafe condition by checking that the CVR impact switch is installed with the reset switch facing forward on the listed MHI RJ airplane models. This inspection aims to improve safety for pilots and passengers on those regional jets.
