Alaska Air Routes Vanish: Old Radios Retire

Published Date: 7/14/2025

Rule

Summary

The FAA is canceling three old flight paths in Alaska because two key radio beacons are shutting down. Pilots flying in Alaska will need to adjust their routes, but this won’t affect similar routes elsewhere. These changes start soon and won’t cost anyone extra—just smoother skies ahead!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Alaska federal airways revoked

If you fly in Alaska, the FAA is revoking three federal airways: Colored Federal Airway Green 6 (G-6) and Alaskan VOR Federal Airways V-459 and V-496. The FAA says it is taking this action because the St. Marys, AK Nondirectional Radio Beacon (NDB) and the Aniak, AK NDB are being decommissioned, and the change will take effect soon and "won't cost anyone extra."

California V-459 remains unchanged

The identifier V-459 is also used for a VOR airway in California, but this action revokes only the Alaskan V-459 and does not revoke the V-459 in California.
