EPA Lets Farmers Skip Tests on Soybean Super-Proteins

Published Date: 8/6/2025

Rule

Summary

Farmers and food makers using soybeans with special Bacillus thuringiensis proteins Cry1A.2 and Cry1B.2 no longer need to worry about residue limits on their crops. Thanks to Bayer CropScience’s request, the EPA says these proteins are safe enough to skip setting maximum residue levels, making things simpler and faster for everyone. This change kicks in right away, helping save time and money in growing and selling soybeans.

Soybean Bt Protein Residue Exemption

If you grow or process soybeans containing the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1A.2 or Cry1B.2 proteins used as plant-incorporated protectants (PIP), the EPA exempts residues of those proteins from the requirement of a tolerance. This rule eliminates the need to establish a maximum permissible residue level for those proteins on soybean when used in accordance with the exemption.
