Published Date: 9/29/2025

Rule

Summary

The VA is giving family caregivers of veterans more time to stay in their special support program by extending the deadline from 2025 to 2028. This means caregivers and veterans who joined the program earlier (the legacy group) can keep getting help for three more years. No changes to money or benefits, just extra time to enjoy the support they deserve!

VA Caregiver Program Extended to 2028

If you are a veteran or a family caregiver who is a legacy participant or legacy applicant in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC), you can remain in the program through September 30, 2028. The rule extends the prior transition deadline (September 30, 2025) and does not change benefit amounts or payments—only the transition period is lengthened.
