Government Asks: Is Our Nuclear Tracking Paperwork Good Enough?

Published Date: 12/11/2025

Notice

Summary

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is renewing the paperwork for NRC Form 748, which helps track special nuclear materials to keep everyone safe. This affects companies and people who handle these materials, and the NRC wants your feedback by February 9, 2026. No big changes or extra costs are expected—just keeping the system running smoothly!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory NRC Form 748 Reporting

If you are a licensee that manufactures, receives, transfers, disassembles, or disposes of nationally tracked radioactive sources, you must report key transactions to the NRC using NRC Form 748. Reporting is required on occasion (at completion of a transaction and at inventory reconciliation); the agency estimates 17,825 annual responses from 977 respondents and a total of 2,181 hours needed annually to comply.

NSTS Strengthens Radioactive Source Oversight

The National Source Tracking System (NSTS) is a mandatory, centralized database that helps the NRC and Agreement States track high-risk sealed radioactive sources from manufacture through final disposition. The NSTS supports inspections and investigations, enables timely communication with other government agencies, and helps verify legitimate ownership and use of these sources.
