Tiny West Virginia Airport Set for Permanent Shutdown and Sell-Off

Published Date: 12/17/2025

Notice

Summary

Mason County wants to close its airport in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, for good. Since the airport isn’t used much and there are better nearby airports, the FAA is considering letting them sell the land and use the money to improve a nearby airport. People have until January 26, 2026, to share their thoughts on this plan.

Permanent closure and land disposal

The FAA is considering approving Mason County's request to permanently close Mason County Airport and release the airport from federal obligations so the county may dispose of the entire 125.56 acres of airport property. Most of the 124.28 acres were acquired with FAA Grant No. 9-46-016-C902 (FAA paid 50% of that acquisition cost in 1969) and 1.28 acres were acquired from the General Services Administration in 1967.

Sale proceeds directed to Jackson County Airport

As a condition of release, the proceeds from the sale of Mason County Airport property and the unamortized portion of a 2015 grant to Mason County will be provided to Jackson County Airport. Jackson County Airport has facilities the notice describes as superior—including a full-length parallel taxiway, fuel services, flight instruction, and a newly built terminal—to accommodate former users of Mason County Airport.
