Published Date: 1/14/2026

Notice

Summary

The Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) is meeting on February 5-6, 2026, to focus only on the most important and new nuclear safety issues, thanks to a recent government order. This means fewer reviews but sharper attention on big changes, affecting nuclear plant operators and regulators. The meeting will be partly in-person and partly online, making it easy for the public to join and stay informed.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

ACRS Narrows Review to Novel Issues

The ACRS will implement Section 4.(b) of Executive Order 14300 so its functions are reduced to the minimum necessary to meet statutory obligations and its review of permitting and licensing issues will focus only on issues that are truly novel and noteworthy. The ACRS will undertake other work only as directed by the Commission, starting with the February 5-6, 2026 meetings.

Remote Participation Available to Public

The ACRS meeting on February 5-6, 2026 will be hybrid: some members in person and others remote. Interested members of the public are encouraged to join remotely via Microsoft Teams or by phone at 301-576-2978 (passcode 809562187#), and the agenda and Teams link are posted on the ACRS public website.

Some Sessions May Be Closed

Portions of the ACRS sessions on February 5-6, 2026 may be closed under 5 U.S.C. 552b(c)(2) for internal personnel matters and under 5 U.S.C. 552b(c)(4) to protect proprietary information. Electronic recording and camera use are limited to open portions of the meeting.

Public Comment Procedural Deadlines

Members of the public who wish to make oral statements should notify the cognizant ACRS staff (Quynh Nguyen) 5 days before the meeting if possible, and electronic copies of presentations should be emailed at least 3 days before the meeting. These timeframes apply to participation in the February 5-6, 2026 sessions.
