DHS Terminates Somalia TPS: Protections End March 2026

Published Date: 1/14/2026

Notice

Summary

The U.S. government is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Somalia on March 17, 2026, because conditions there have improved. After that date, Somali nationals with TPS will lose their special protection and work permits. This means they’ll need to find other ways to stay or work in the U.S., so it’s a big change for those affected.

Somalia TPS Ends March 17, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security is terminating Somalia's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) effective at 11:59 p.m. local time on March 17, 2026. After that date, Somali nationals with TPS will no longer have TPS and will lose their permission to remain and their Employment Authorization Documents (work permits); they will need other lawful ways to stay or work in the U.S.

Return to Prior Immigration Status Rule

When Somalia's TPS ends, beneficiaries revert to the same immigration status or category they had before TPS if that prior status still exists, or to any other lawfully obtained status they received while registered for TPS, as long as it is still valid on the termination date. If they have no other valid status on March 17, 2026, they will no longer have lawful TPS-based status.

Estimated Number of People Affected

DHS estimates there are 1,082 currently approved Somalia TPS beneficiaries and 1,383 pending Somalia TPS applications as of December 8, 2025. Those approved will lose TPS on March 17, 2026, and pending applicants will no longer receive TPS under Somalia's designation.
