Four-Month Extension for HCS Deadlines

OSHA moved four HCS compliance deadlines forward by four months. The deadline in 29 CFR 1910.1200(j)(2)(i) changed from January 19, 2026 to May 19, 2026; (j)(2)(ii) from July 20, 2026 to November 20, 2026; (j)(3)(i) from July 19, 2027 to November 19, 2027; and (j)(3)(ii) from January 19, 2028 to May 19, 2028. This applies to chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers who must update labels, hazard communication programs, and employee training as required by the HCS.

Temporary Choice Between Old and New HCS

Between May 20, 2024 and the extended compliance dates, chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers may comply with the 2012 Hazard Communication Standard, the updated HCS (May 20, 2024), or both. The extension keeps this option in place until each revised compliance date arrives.
