NorthWestern Energy Gets Hydro Holdover Through 2026

Published Date: 1/22/2026

Notice

Summary

NorthWestern Energy gets the green light to keep running the Thompson Falls Hydroelectric Project through 2026 while waiting for a new license. This means no interruptions in power or operations, and the current rules stay in place until a fresh license is granted. If no new license shows up by the end of 2026, the project’s annual license automatically renews, keeping the energy flowing smoothly.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Annual License Issued for 2026

NorthWestern Energy was issued an annual license for the Thompson Falls Hydroelectric Project No. 1869 effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026. This lets the project continue operating under the terms and conditions of the prior license until a new license or other disposition occurs.

Automatic Renewal if No New License

If a new license or other disposition is not issued on or before December 31, 2026, the annual license for Project No. 1869 will automatically renew under 18 CFR 16.18(c) without further order or notice by the Commission, unless the Commission orders otherwise. This ensures the project keeps operating past that date absent Commission action.

Continued Operation If Not Subject to Section 15

If the Thompson Falls Project is not subject to section 15 of the Federal Power Act, NorthWestern Energy is authorized to continue operating the project under the terms and conditions of the prior license until a subsequent license is issued or other disposition under the FPA occurs. This allows ongoing operations while licensing is resolved.
