Summary

The Bureau of Indian Affairs updated its official list of 575 recognized Tribes eligible for federal help, including the newly recognized Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. While the Lumbee Tribe is now on the list, some rules delay their access to services until a few years from now. This update also fixes Tribal names and adds helpful notes to keep things clear and fair.

Lumbee Added — Services Deferred

If you are a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Congress added the Tribe to the Bureau of Indian Affairs list by Public Law 119-60 enacted December 18, 2025. The Tribe’s eligibility for federal services is subject to the Secretary of the Interior verifying the Tribe’s roll and the development of a determination of needs, and delivery of services is generally delayed until the third fiscal year following enactment of Public Law 119-60.

Updated List: 575 Recognized Tribes

The Bureau of Indian Affairs published an updated official list of 575 Tribal entities recognized as eligible to receive funding and services from the BIA. Listed Tribes are recognized to have the immunities and privileges available to federally recognized Indian Tribes by virtue of their government-to-government relationship with the United States.

Name Corrections and Former Names Kept

The BIA corrected Tribal names and includes Tribes' previously listed or "aka" names in parentheses after the current Tribal name. The BIA will continue to list former or previously listed names for several years before dropping the former names to aid identification and clarity.
