Summary
If your U.S. business owns or controls a foreign company, you’ll need to fill out the BE-577 survey every quarter. This survey helps the government track how much money U.S. companies invest abroad and how it affects the economy. You’ll have 30 days after each quarter to report, or 45 days if it’s the year’s final quarter—so keep an eye on those deadlines!

Mandatory Quarterly BE-577 Reporting
If your U.S. business owns or controls a foreign company that meets the reporting criteria, you must complete the BE-577 survey every quarter. BEA will contact entities required to report, and each quarterly report is due 30 days after the quarter (45 days for the final quarter of the reporting year).
Who Must File: Ownership and Size Tests
You must report if a U.S. person holds at least 10% of the voting stock (or equivalent) of a foreign affiliate and that affiliate either had total assets, annual sales, or annual net income (after foreign taxes) greater than $500,000,000 at any time during its fiscal year. Indirectly-owned affiliates meeting the $500,000,000 test must also be reported if the intercompany receivable or payable with the U.S. reporter exceeded $10,000,000.
No Reporting If Not Contacted by BEA
If BEA does not contact your entity, you have no reporting responsibilities for the BE-577 survey. BEA will mail notice of specific reporting requirements only to those required to complete the survey.
Filing Options and Help Resources
You can file BE-577 reports electronically at www.bea.gov/efile, or download forms and instructions from www.bea.gov/dia and submit by mail or fax. BEA provides phone and email contacts for questions about Form BE-577.
Estimated Reporting Burden and OMB Control Number
BEA estimates the public reporting burden for the BE-577 at an average of 1 hour per response. The collection has OMB control number 0608-0004 under the Paperwork Reduction Act.
