Exemption Allows AXIOM Fuel at Catawba

On March 10, 2026 the NRC granted Duke Energy Carolinas an exemption allowing the use of AXIOM® fuel rod cladding at Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 1 in place of the zircaloy/ZIRLO™ materials specified in 10 CFR 50.46. The licensee must continue to meet the acceptance criteria, use NRC-approved analytical methods and operate within technical specifications for reload cores, and the exemption is effective upon issuance.

NRC Finds No Safety or Environmental Risks

The NRC concluded on March 10, 2026 that allowing AXIOM® cladding at Catawba Unit 1 will not present an undue risk to public health and safety, will not significantly change effluents released offsite, and will not significantly increase occupational radiation exposure. Because it meets the criteria in 10 CFR 51.22(c)(9), no environmental assessment or environmental impact statement is required for this exemption.
