Rail Brakes Swap Manual Tests for Auto Efficiency

Published Date: 3/31/2026

Notice

Summary

IS Technology Solutions asked the Federal Railroad Administration to approve a new way to test single railcar air brakes using an automatic device instead of the old manual method. This change could speed up testing and reduce how often the device needs calibration, saving time and effort. People involved in railroad safety and equipment testing should share their thoughts by April 30, 2026.

Automatic Tester Allowed Instead of Manual

If you test or maintain passenger railcar air brakes, IS Technology Solutions petitioned the FRA to allow an automatic signal car testing device (ASCTD) to be used instead of a manual single car testing device to comply with 49 CFR 238.311. The petitioner says ASCTDs have been used for several years and are a faster and more accurate alternative.

Calibration Frequency Reduced to Annual

IS Technology Solutions asked the FRA to allow the ASCTD to be calibrated annually instead of every 92 days as is required for the manual device. Changing calibration from every 92 days to once per year would reduce how often the device needs calibration and could save time and effort for those performing the tests.
