Allow Battery-Powered PAPRs at Glen Alum

Marfork Coal Company asks MSHA to modify 30 CFR 75.500(d) for the Glen Alum Tunnel Mine so miners may use a battery-powered powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) — the 3M Versaflow TR-800-HIK motor/blower and battery — as an alternative method of compliance. The company says the PAPR provides a constant flow of air for respiratory protection and comfort in warm working conditions and argues that forbidding it would diminish safety. MSHA is accepting comments on the petition through May 4, 2026.
