This law authorizes a single Congressional Gold Medal to honor 13 U.S. servicemembers killed in the August 26, 2021 suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. It names Maxton Soviak, Kareem Nikoui, David Espinoza, Rylee McCollum, Jared Schmitz, Hunter Lopez, Taylor Hoover, Daegan William-Tyeler Page, Nicole Gee, Humberto Sanchez, Dylan Merola, Johanny Rosario Pichardo, and Ryan Knauss. The Secretary of the Treasury will strike the gold medal, present it through the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate, and give the medal to the Smithsonian for display with a sense that the Smithsonian make it available for display outside the District of Columbia at times. The Secretary may strike and sell bronze duplicates at prices sufficient to cover costs, the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund may be charged for medal costs, and proceeds from bronze sales shall be deposited into the Fund.
117-hr-1057 — Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Act
Creates commemorative coins honoring the National World War II Memorial. The Treasury must mint three coins in 2024: up to 50,000 five-dollar gold coins, up to 400,000 one-dollar silver coins, and up to 750,000 half-dollar clad coins. Designs must be emblematic of the Memorial and World War II service and reviewed with the Commission of Fine Arts, the Friends of the National World War II Memorial, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. Coins are legal tender and offered in uncirculated and proof qualities. Sales include surcharges of $35 for the $5 coin, $10 for the $1 coin, and $5 for the half-dollar. All surcharges are paid to the Friends to support Memorial maintenance and educational programs, and the Treasury must recover design and issuance costs before any surcharges are disbursed.
