Whittier can buy railroad land
The law allows the Alaska Railroad Corporation to transfer surface ownership of about 84.8 acres in five areas to Whittier. The city must provide fair market value through cash, land of equal value, or both. Valid existing rights remain protected. The city and corporation must sign an agreement for needed surveys and land maps. The corporation’s board must approve any reasonable changes to the legal land descriptions. Any land the corporation receives must be held and managed under Alaska’s railroad corporation law.
