Stronger training for Alaska nurse aides

Beginning January 1, 2027, Alaska’s certified nurse aide training rules must require programs to ensure safe, skilled client care. Training must teach aides to build relationships, support independence, and respect clients’ rights, values, choices, and dignity. Aides must learn to understand care needs, observe and report changes, solve problems, and follow assessment and care-planning best practices. Training must address clients’ emotional, social, and mental health needs. It must teach effective communication with clients who have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, mental illness, intellectual disabilities, or other cognitive impairments. Aides must learn about Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, related behaviors, and caring for clients with declining or impaired thinking abilities. Training also covers daily activities: eating, dressing, grooming, bathing, and toileting.
