Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Smaller cities can choose council size

Alaska second-class cities with more than 1,000 residents must have seven council members. Those with 1,000 residents or fewer set council size by local ordinance, choosing three to seven members. Members are elected by voters across the city unless an ordinance provides another election method.

Municipalities gain options for school board terms

The law lets municipal governing bodies change school board terms through a local ordinance. Municipal school district board terms are normally three years. An ordinance changing those terms under the municipal government law must also win voter approval.

School board members must complete training

Alaska school board members, including regional board members, must receive ethics and budgeting training within 30 days after starting each term. The Department of Education and Early Development must provide the training.
