Etowah County guests face tighter tax exemption

Beginning October 1, 2026, Etowah County raises its lodging-tax exemption threshold from 30 to 180 continuous days. Guests staying 30 to 179 continuous days lose this exemption and may pay lodging tax. Rooms and other accommodations supplied for at least 180 continuous days remain exempt. The law does not specify the tax rate or added cost.

Etowah County redirects lodging taxes locally

Beginning October 1, 2026, Etowah County changes how it distributes annual lodging-tax revenue payable to the county. The first $491,000 goes through the county treasury to the Etowah County Tourism Board for its work. All remaining revenue goes to the Etowah County Mega Sports Complex Authority. This allocation does not provide direct household payments or change guests' tax rates.
