Paid maternity leave for Arkansas school employees

Full-time female employees of Arkansas public school districts and open-enrollment public charter schools can get up to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave. They must have worked there for more than one year, with no discipline for leave abuse during the year before applying. Leave covers the first 12 weeks after a biological child's birth, adoption placement, or foster placement. Adopted or foster children must be under one year old when placed in the employee's home. An employee who used 12 weeks for a foster placement cannot get another 12 weeks after adopting that same child. Pay can be partial or full; the law does not set the wage-replacement amount.

State pays schools' full maternity leave costs

The Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education pays 100% of incurred costs for approved paid maternity leave. This replaces the former 50/50 cost split with participating public school districts and open-enrollment public charter schools. The division must create and sign a standard agreement with participating schools. It must also adopt rules for managing agreements, processing reimbursements, and carrying out the program. The law does not specify a total funding amount.
