Commission-approved off-campus firearm safety courses can be held with a live-fire exercise or sporting event. Before a student participates in such a course, both the provider and school must obtain prior written approval. Approval must come from the student’s parent, legal guardian, or person acting as a parent. This requirement applies to public school districts and open-enrollment public charter schools.
Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, Arkansas public school districts and open-enrollment public charter schools must teach firearm safety annually. Lessons must fit students’ ages and grades and continue through grade 12. The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education approves lessons and sets the starting grade with the Arkansas State Game and Fish Commission. They must study firearm injury ages and children’s risks from unsecured guns to choose that grade. Lessons teach students not to touch an unsecured gun and to tell an adult immediately. They also cover avoiding injury, school firearm safety, safe handling and storage, and accident prevention, using neutral viewpoints. Preferred teaching methods include commission-produced or approved videos, online materials, and alternative lessons that may include commission-approved off-campus courses.
The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education cannot approve firearm safety lessons or materials bearing brands or stated group affiliations. Branding issued by Arkansas or its departments, agencies, or divisions is allowed. This limits the materials available for schools’ required firearm safety instruction.
