Advanced practice nurses can share more tasks

Arkansas advanced practice registered nurses can assign certain nursing tasks to qualified, trained workers not otherwise licensed or authorized to perform them. These tasks include drawing blood and giving medicines or vaccines. Medicines and vaccines qualify only when the Arkansas nursing board finds they need no specialized judgment or skill. Workers must give medicines and vaccines within the nurse’s clinical setting. The nurse must supervise the worker and remains responsible for the worker’s actions. Workers cannot present themselves as licensed health professionals or pass the task to someone else. The board must set rules covering patient condition severity, training, competency, and other relevant standards. It may allow additional tasks. Nurse anesthetists cannot delegate giving anesthesia. The law leaves intact other state laws allowing people to perform particular tasks.
