Easier survivor benefits for Arkansas teachers' spouses

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law shortens the marriage requirement for Arkansas Teacher Retirement System survivor benefits. A surviving spouse qualifies after at least one year of marriage immediately before an active member's death, instead of two. The benefit is calculated as though the member retired on the death date and chose a 100% survivor annuity. It also includes benefits under Arkansas Code § 24-7-713. The spouse's entitlement does not apply if the member named another beneficiary to receive the remaining payable balance on a system-approved form.
