Nurse midwives gain broader care authority

Arkansas certified nurse midwives with full practice authority can evaluate patients, diagnose conditions, and order and interpret diagnostic tests. They can manage treatment, sharing care or transferring high-risk patients to other health professionals as needed. They can prescribe and administer Schedule III–V drugs without a collaborative practice agreement or another health professional's supervision. They can also admit and discharge patients at licensed hospitals that grant them privileges. Hospitals are not required to grant those privileges.

Nurse midwives can certify vital records

Arkansas certified nurse midwives can complete, sign, and submit birth and death certificate forms. For births in institutions or en route, attending midwives must provide required medical information within 72 hours after birth. The institution's person in charge remains responsible for preparing, certifying, and filing the birth certificate. Outside an institution, an attending physician or nurse midwife has first priority to prepare and file the birth certificate. A midwife responsible for care of the condition causing death must complete and sign the death certificate's medical certification. It must be returned to the funeral director within three business days after receipt, unless a legally required inquiry applies.
