Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Medication assistants can give more treatments

At designated facilities, certified medication assistants can give medicines by inhalation, not just through an oral inhaler. They can also give insulin by injection under the skin. An authorized prescriber must order the medicine, and a licensed nurse must supervise. Controlled substances remain excluded.

Nurse aides face new certification requirements

Arkansas medication assistant applicants no longer need one year of nurse aide registration or full-time nurse aide experience. But the standard path requires at least 115 hours of approved training, up from 100. Applicants also need good standing on the nurse aide registry and a job at a designated facility. They must have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete an approved literacy screening, and pass the board's exam. Another path allows equivalent nursing education plus a passing medication assistant exam.

First medication assistant offense loses misdemeanor

For listed medication assistant violations, a first offense carries a $25–$500 fine instead of a misdemeanor classification. Each later offense is a Class C misdemeanor.
