More experience counts for aide instructors

Arkansas broadens the nursing experience registered nurses can count toward qualifying as primary instructors for long-term care aides. Experience can come from jobs, internships, externships, or other means. It includes working in nursing facilities or units, supervising nursing students there, and working in or supervising nursing assistant education programs. It also includes geriatrics outside geriatric psychiatry, long-term acute care hospitals, home health, hospice, and other long-term care settings. Nurses still need two years of general nursing experience as a registered nurse. This must include one year providing long-term care nursing services in a nursing facility within the past 10 years, up from five years. The law defines long-term care facilities to include nursing homes, residential care, assisted living, adult daycare, and other facilities providing long-term medical or personal care.

Aide instructors face licensing and training rules

Primary instructors for long-term care aide training must be registered nurses licensed in Arkansas or have a qualifying multistate practice privilege. The multistate option applies to nurses moving from a Nurse Licensure Compact state who meet all Arkansas licensing requirements. Instructors must have no disciplinary action against their license by the licensing authority. They must also attend an eight-hour class every year authorized by the Arkansas Department of Human Services. The class covers law and rule updates, best practices, and common issues in long-term care facilities.
