More Medicaid help for complex dental care

Arkansas Medicaid pays for qualifying complex dental care for adults age 18 or older who need sedation dentistry. The care must be complicated by an intellectual or developmental disability or a qualifying craniofacial condition. The craniofacial condition must be diagnosed by someone who evaluated the patient and belongs to a nationally approved cleft-craniofacial team. Medicaid reimburses dental schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and academic medical centers. Covered costs include professional dental and anesthesia fees and supplies, excluding discounts and rebates. Payment is capped at $3,750 per episode of care and $5,000 per person each year. The Department of Human Services can approve amounts above the yearly cap through an extension-of-benefits request. The department must seek any federal waiver, Medicaid plan amendment, or other approval needed to carry out the law.
