Insurers must pay for technician testing
Arkansas Medicaid and health benefit plans offered or issued by insurers in Arkansas must reimburse psychologists for technician-administered testing. Payment covers administration and scoring of psychological tests under supervision. The law does not set payment rates or state how patients’ out-of-pocket costs change.
Psychology technicians face annual registration fees
The Arkansas Psychology Board can require psychology technicians to pay a $10 annual registration fee. The law does not make the fee automatic.
Broader psychology technician roles with limits
Arkansas psychology technicians can work beyond neuropsychology for psychologists or healthcare facilities with established psychological service or research programs. Under supervision, they can administer and score standardized objective tests using set procedures, provide structured cognitive interventions, and administer fitness-to-proceed exams. They cannot choose tests, conduct intake assessments or clinical interviews, interpret results, give patients results or recommendations, or test in schools. A board-approved Arkansas psychologist must oversee service quality and resources and be qualified in the technician’s work areas. Each psychologist can supervise no more than four full-time technicians at once.
Psychology technicians face new training rules
Technicians need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school approved by the Arkansas Psychology Board; specific psychology courses and the preferred psychology major are removed. Current technicians lacking the specified academic background must receive information about extra training in test administration. Supervising psychologists must provide and document 80 training hours. These include at least 4 hours on ethics, confidentiality, mandatory reporting and testing practices; 16 studying manuals; 20 observing a psychologist administer and score tests; and 40 practicing under direct, in-person supervision. Supervisors must also explain role limits, medical emergency procedures, and responses when patients found legally incompetent or subject to court orders try to leave without permission.
