The law requires Arkansas Medicaid to pay for treatment of diseases and conditions caused by severe obesity. Coverage includes weight-loss surgery recognized by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, plus care before and after surgery. The law does not require coverage for glucose-lowering shots or other weight-loss drugs. The Department of Human Services must seek any federal approvals needed to put this coverage in place.
