School notices give parents more diabetes information

Arkansas school districts must include diabetes information when sharing certain health information with parents or guardians of kindergarten-through-grade-12 students. This applies to information about immunizations, infectious diseases, medicines, or other school health issues. The material must explain Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, their risks, warning signs, and screening processes. It must also explain what the stages of Type 1 diabetes mean. For students showing warning signs, it must recommend asking their primary care provider whether immediate screening is appropriate. After a diagnosis, it must recommend consulting that provider to develop a treatment plan. The state Education and Health departments must develop the material together and make it available to districts and on both websites. The information is for education, not a medical diagnosis.
