Arkansas judges can serve as special judges immediately after retirement, but must be appointed to that role. The change applies retroactively to January 1, 2025. An emergency clause addresses a shortage of special judges and the need to keep court cases moving. The law takes effect upon the Governor’s approval, expiration of the veto period without action, or the final vote overriding a veto. It sets no new pay amounts and creates no direct household payment.
