Emergency medicine kits for addiction treatment patients

Arkansas alcohol and drug treatment programs, including stand-alone detox centers, can keep emergency medicine kits. These kits meet immediate patient needs when medicine from other sources cannot arrive soon enough to prevent harm. Programs must have a doctor or other medical staff and be able to give controlled substances and noncontrolled prescription drugs. Each program must name one pharmacy to supply and oversee its kit. That pharmacy must be licensed by Arkansas and registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Kits must stay in a locked container or cabinet behind a locked door, accessible only to licensed medical staff. Only licensed medical staff can give kit medicine, following a doctor's or advanced practice registered nurse's order and federal prescribing rules. The pharmacy must replace used medicine within 72 hours, based on a prescription for the patient who received it. Kits cannot contain Schedule II controlled substances. The Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy must set rules for kit contents, quantities, storage, security, use, and access.
