New commission supports Arkansas’s 200th birthday celebration

The law creates the eight-member Arkansas 2036 Commission to promote a statewide celebration of Arkansas’s 200th birthday. It explores building a landmark to promote tourism and helps develop programs, projects, and activities about Arkansas history and heritage. It also assists the Division of Arkansas Heritage with birthday programs. Members include the Division’s director and the state education secretary, or their chosen representatives. The Governor, House Speaker, and Senate President Pro Tempore each appoint two members. The Division’s director or representative chairs the commission and must call its first meeting within 30 days of the law’s effective date. Later meetings take place at the chair’s call. Members serve at their appointing authority’s pleasure, and vacancies follow the original appointment process. The commission sets its business rules, and a majority of members is needed to conduct business. The Division provides staff, and members receive no pay. The commission and all member terms end on December 31, 2036.
