Companies can share lawyers with affiliates

Arkansas law allows for-profit corporations and voluntary associations to employ lawyers for their own affairs and their affiliates’ affairs and lawsuits. Affiliates include corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, and associations linked through ownership or control, including parent, subsidiary, and sibling entities. The law also permits these for-profit entities to examine and insure real estate titles. Nonprofits can provide legal help to poor or disadvantaged clients in civil or criminal matters through licensed attorneys following Arkansas practice rules. Nonprofits, voluntary associations, and government bodies recognized under federal tax law Section 115 can also provide civil legal help to specified public clients. These clients include cities, counties, public school districts, their officers and employees, their legally required self-funding groups, and their self-insurance risk pools. Those public-client services must use licensed Arkansas attorneys and follow state practice rules. The general ban on corporate law practice remains outside the listed exceptions.
