Drivers get new license renewal rules

An Arkansas intermediate license lasts no more than two years. If issued before age 18, it expires at 18 after 12 months without a serious accident or serious traffic conviction. If issued at age 18 or older, it expires once the driver reaches that same 12-month clean driving record. At expiration or within 30 days afterward, drivers meeting that driving-record requirement can exchange it for an eight-year regular license. Drivers who do not meet the requirement can renew their intermediate license for another two years during that renewal window.

Intermediate licenses expand, with fees and checks

Arkansas applicants age 16 or older, including adults, can get an intermediate Class D or Class M license. The Office of Driver Services must issue these restricted licenses to eligible applicants, with a $12 issuance fee. Applicants must have no serious accident or conviction for a serious traffic violation in the past six months. The law also recognizes learner’s licenses for people under 16, with the same six-month requirement. The office must check driving records before issuing either license type.
